Lions in the Old Testament
For this blog entry I decided to choose my own topic and analyze the meaning behind lions in the Old Testament. I learned interestingly enough that the type of writing that uses symbolism to depict a lion in the old testament is called apocalyptic. This is a very common pattern throughout the bible because it helps people further understand the meaning of the scripture on a personal level. In Revelation 5.5, Jesus is shown as "the Lion of the Tribe of Judah." This is explained as Jesus has entered the throne of God. The bible uses the symbolism of a lion because they are amazing and strong creatures who are capable of many things. The picture of Jesus as a lion gives believers hope that he is the conquering king and that if we have him as our leader, we have nothing to be scared of. On the contrary, lions can be depicted as well as one who can punish those who do not follow him or his values. A lions roar can symbolize Gods word and unwavering strength in any face of struggle or fear. In Hosea 11:10, "They will follow the Lord; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west" God is depicted in a positive way. The way God is compared to a lion makes him out to be strong, honorable, and commands attention. The way the Lord is compared to the lion is like saying that when God speaks (the lion roaring) the people will come to listen to what he has to say.
