Sydney Rose Small-Blog 2-The Middle-Ground; Reflection of the Ecology of Eden-11/01/2022

 There has been an ongoing question of how to solve climate change. Should humans just die out and leave everything to recover by itself? Or, should humans try to be the managers of the world and dig us out of the mess that we have brought upon ourselves? Well, I believe there is a middle-ground that we should follow, one that Eisenburg discussed in the Ecology of Eden. In fact, Eisenburg discussed a lot of extremes and advocated for finding a middle-ground. I wonder if we ended up leaving our mess behind and leave the world to recover by itself, if we would experience something like the movie Wall-E where the Earth cannot recover because the damage that humans have done is already too far gone. However, if we over-manage the world, it may turn into a situation like the Lorax where everything may seem like it is perfect but it is not. I also think that either way, there would be people who were strongly for one extreme, people who were for another extreme, and people who were passive either way. Due to this, it is best if there is a middle-ground where we leave parts of our world alone to recover from our damage and managing other places through legislation. There also can be a mixture of the two such as the national parks where things are being managed yet the wilderness is being left to adapt by itself. I would love to know any of your thought on this.

Emily Anstett 11/20 Religion and Climate Change Article Reflection

  https://insideclimatenews.org/news/27062022/religion-climate-change/ This article describes how some Rabbis are beginning to advocate for climate action and bring the problem of climate change to their congregation’s attention.  They are trying to “bridge the gap” between faith and climate.  I am interested in how western religions can adapt to incorporate more ecologically conscious views and practices.  I also think it is important to reconsider how religions dictate interactions with the environment.  For instance, the way that people interpret God giving dominion over the earth can have important implications.  For instance, does that mean that people are free to exploit and do whatever they see fit with God’s dominion? Jaidan Brass - Ecology of Eden Ch. 13 & 14 (12/04)

      In these two chapter, Eisenberg talks about the ranges seen between the mountain and the tower--or between wilderness and civilization. These are in examples like pastoralism, suburbia, and arcadia. They are the middle ground of the two extremes with mountains having no civilization at all and towers having no wilderness. While middle grounds tend to start out alright, they usually start failing after awhile. It's  possibly because the lifestyle was not sustainable. Pastoralism is starts degrading the soils once it gets to populated or gets overgrazed. The mountain part of suburbs can easily be lost into ideals where the community loses the reasons on why suburban areas were made. The middle ground is a delicate balance, but one many want to live in to enjoy the benefits of both the wilderness and civilization.
